A Captain Marvel cosmic flight cover is easy to love and easy to misread. Gold foil catches the eye; the gutter tells the cycle. We start at the cape line. If it cuts the panel on the same diagonal as a plate you already hold, the new issue is a cousin, not a missing number.
Binary stars in the background are not a cycle mark by themselves. Printers reuse the star cluster. What we look for is whether the second star sits inside the wake or outside it, and whether the reprint caption on the file still names the original flight hour.
Printer swagger — extra sparkle, a louder red — is noted and then ignored unless the collector’s wall requires display punch. Cabinets that aim for a complete run should pay for sequence, not swagger. That argument has lost us briefs. It has also kept Flight Cycle 07 from being crowded out by a shinier extra.
Before we bid, we write three lines: cycle number, gutter tell, caption status. If we cannot fill those lines, we do not spend the seasonal budget.
